Lexington Native Mathew O'Brien Swims His Way to Olympic Trials

Lexington native and swimmer Mathew O'Brien qualified for the Olympic Trials in Omaha, Nebraska recently. 

O'Brien qualified at the North Shore Swim Club last chance meet at MIT. The qualifying time for the 100 butterfly is 55.29, and O'Brien swam 54.68.

The Olympic Trial swim meet is the hardest qualifying standards in the world in the sport of swimming. The top two swimmers at trials will represent the USA in London. The Olympic Trials will be June 25 to July 2. O'Brien races June 30. 

O'Brien, a Methuen resident, also coaches for North Shore Swim Club. The last chance qualifier had swimmers from Harvard, MIT, Columbia University, New England Swimming, New York, and New Jersey. There were five swimmers who qualified at the meet.

The North Shore Swim Club is a USA Swimming program for children ages 8 to 18, with practices held at Minuteman High and Hanscom AFB.
