Lexington Post 38 Blanks Sudbury in Legion Baseball

Lexington records shutout win over Sudbury, 2-0.

In a week beset by rain delays and cancellations, the Lexington Post 38 American Legion baseball team was finally able to take to the field Wednesday night, blanking Sudbury 2-0.

Lexington (2-1) scored two early runs under the lights at Lexington High School and pitcher Demi Monovoukas threw a complete game.

Monovoukas shut out the opposition with help from some strong defense.

"Our defense is there – our pitching was good, our pitcher had a strong game – even when the hitting wasn't there," said Lexington assistant coach Matt Lawlor.

Lexington only reached base four times from the fourth inning on – once on a walk, and three times on singles.

Although hitting was not a strong point last night, Lexington's defense was stellar. Post 38 did not commit an error and had several nice plays in the field.

On the offensive side, Lexington players were repeatedly caught stealing, but Lawlor was still pleased with the effort.

"We're trying to get guys from second to third, to get scoring opportunities and escape the double play situation," he said. "So if (Sudbury) makes the play, you have to tip your cap to them, but if we make the play, then we've got runners in scoring position."

Lexington's team consists mostly of players from LHS, although there are several from around the area. One player hails from Boston College High (Justin Silvestro), one from Bedford (Nick Taylor) and another from Lexington Christian Academy (Nick Mayersohn).

"They're an exciting group of kids," Lawlor said.

Lexington will play again Sunday when it hosts Arlington at the high school.
