Lexington Symphony Presents "Across the Pond"
New World Chorale joins the Symphony for a performance of a piece heard only twice in Boston in the past 28 years.

Lexington Symphony’s 2014–2015 20th-anniversary season celebrating music from around the globe continues on Saturday, October 18th with “Across the Pond,” a concert featuring the work of two of England’s most notable composers: George Butterworth and Sir Edward Elgar. The concert will take place at 8 p.m. at Lexington High School Auditorium, 251 Waltham Street, Lexington, Massachusetts.
Butterworth, one of the most promising English composers to emerge at the turn of the 20th century, died at the age of 21 at the Battle of the Somme in WWI. Lexington Symphony will present Butterworth’s masterpiece A Shropshire Lad, which is based on a collection of A.E. Housman poems. This magnificent composition demonstrates what great talent Butterworth possessed at such an early age.
Joining the Symphony in a collaborative performance, New World Chorale (Holly Krafka, artistic director) will give voice to Elgar’s stunning choral masterpiece, Dream of Gerontius. Marking the instant when a person leaves this world and the journey of the soul begins, this inspiring work of genius has been heard only twice in Boston in the past 28 years. Elgar’s melodies convey faith, sorrow, and wonder all at once in one of the most inspiring works ever written. Featured performers include Barbara Quintiliani, soprano; Ray Bauwens, tenor; and Aaron Engebreth, baritone.
