Lexington Youth Summer Theatre Auditions: West Side Story

Returning for our 34th annual summer production, LYST is looking for excited and eager students, entering grades 5 through 12 (and NEW this year: graduating seniors), who wish to partake in the amazing journey that West Side Story will provide! Students, no matter what part they play, should expect to have a fair amount of acting, singing, and plenty of dancing opportunity within this show! West Side Story is an award winning adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet transported to modern-day New York City, as two young idealistic lovers find themselves
caught between warring street gangs, the "American" Jets and the Puerto
Rican Sharks. Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice is one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas of our time. Also,
NEW for this year we are launching the LYST Advanced Theatre Workshop.  This workshop experience will be for select students chosen by the artistic team who prove in their audition for the MainStage production that they have what it takes to dive into an intensive workshop to deepen and broaden their theater skills. These students will participate in both shows and will get the chance to perform their show in a matinee performance during production week! This year's show will be Songs for a New World. Jason Robert Brown (the composer and creator of SfaNW) says, "it's about one moment. It's about hitting the wall and having to make a choice, or take a stand, or turn around and go back." These are the stories and characters of today, the Songs for A New World

We also want to welcome our artistic team this year. Mark Mercer returns and will be taking the reigns as the artistic director and music director. New
this year, Darvin Hernandez will be joining the team as the assistant director and choreographer.

Auditions will be Wednesday, May 28th and Thursday, May 29th, 2014 at 6:00 pm,  at Temple Isaiah, 55 Lincoln St, Lexington, MA 02421. Please prepare a 32-bar Broadway audition piece and bring sheet music for the pianist. In addition to your music, bring clothes and shoes for the dance portion of the audition. Call backs will be Friday, May 30th, 2014 at 6:00pm.

Cost to participate is $295 and shows will be held July 17-20 at Lexington High School.
