The Metropolitan Wind Symphony will perform a band concert, Boston Strong, at 3 pm on Sunday May 3 at the National Heritage Museum, 33 Marrett Road, Lexington, MA, under the direction of conductor Lewis Buckley, who will deliver a pre-concert lecture at 2:30 pm.

Following R. B. Hall’s famous Officer of the Day March, the MWS will perform famous British composer Guy Woolfenden’s homage to the magical and mysterious land of Illyria, Illyrian Dances. Last Stand, David Avshalomov’s powerful, moving conservationist plea to preserve our dwindling forestlands, reflects both the tragic tree loss and the hope of reforestation. The title piece will be Boston Strong, young composer Zach Friedland’s musical response to the indomitable spirit with which Bostonians met the challenge of the Boston Marathon bombings of 2013. The MWS was thrilled when Friedland approached us to offer us the opportunity to give the world premiere of his new work. This is also our student participation concert, in which we will happily welcome students of MWS members to join us for the last four pieces on the program, Moorside Suite by Gustav Holst, Mt. Everest by Rossano Galante, Havendance by David Holsinger, and American Civil War Fantasy by Jerry Bilik. Also on the program are Fugue a la Gigue by J. S. Bach and Heather Ridge Sketches by Stephen Bulla.

Tickets are $18 for adults, $14 for seniors, $6 for students, and are free for children under 5. They are available at the door or can be reserved by telephone. Call the MWS Concert Line at (978) 419-1697 to reserve or purchase tickets. Visit the MWS web page at http://www.mws-boston.org for information and directions. Email mws@mws-boston.org with any questions.
