Minuteman to Serve As Satellite Campus for Middlesex Community College
LEXINGTON – Minuteman High School has announced that it will now serve as a satellite campus of Middlesex Community College. This means that Minuteman students can now be dually enrolled at Minuteman and Middlesex and be eligible to earn college credit while getting their high school diplomas.
“This is a great opportunity for our students,” said Carol Cohen, Coordinator of College and Career Readiness at Minuteman. “We’re very happy with this exciting new partnership with Middlesex Community College.”
According to Ms. Cohen, Minuteman students who take classes for Dual Enrollment credit are considered students of Middlesex Community College and can access services there. For instance, they can use the library and the writing center, and participate in activities offered on campus.
Additionally, by taking college-level courses, Minuteman students can demonstrate they have the academic skills to be successful in college. This will give them a greater chance for success when applying for college admission upon high school graduation.
Six courses have been approved as Dual Enrollment courses:
* English 101 – English Composition 1
* Honors Physics 1
* College Nutrition
* Anatomy and Physiology
* Honors Psychology
* Culinary Arts 12
Not every student will qualify for the Dual Enrollment program. In order to be eligible to earn college credits, students must meet the following criteria:
* Have a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 for the year prior to taking a Dual Enrollment course (i.e. 2015-16 to take a class in the 2016-17 school year)
* Earn a passing score on the Accuplacer (college placement) exam
* Have a 92% attendance rate for the year prior to taking a Dual Enrollment course
* Be recommended by their current teacher in the specific content area.
Dual Enrollment courses cost $87 per credit, less than half of what other Middlesex Community College students pay. Once earned, the credits belong to the student and may be able to be transferred to other colleges, both public and private.
The Dual Enrollment classes will be taught by Minuteman teachers who have been approved by Middlesex Community College as member of the college’s adjunct faculty.
Minuteman students who meet the criteria for eligibility will be invited, with their parents, to an informational meeting at Minuteman on Thursday, June 9 at 8 a.m.
