Save-The-Date: 2018 Lexington MLK Day of Service

The 2018 MLK Day of Service holds events & activities to unite citizens in reflection, volunteering and service to others in Lexington, MA.

The Town of Lexington will commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with its 5th Annual MLK Day of Service by mobilizing our community to assist those in need. Our objective is to engage people of all ages to participate in events and activities to serve others. United in philanthropy under the auspices of the Town Celebrations Committee, our target this year is to serve 2,000+ people through 400+ volunteers. Program and Activities
· 9–10:30 a.m. at Grace Chapel –Lexington Human Rights Council sponsor a Community Dialogue on Race. An opportunity to discuss in small groups ways to employ Dr. King's principles, tactics and strategies to achieve greater equality & justice.
· 11 a.m. Unity Walk from the Lexington Battle Green to Cary Hall. Come and join our community in this fun and symbolic show of unity and solidarity in the name of equality and social justice.
· 11:30 a.m. at Cary Hall Commemoration Program and Musical Performances. Brief and uplifting performances by Lexington literary performer Regie O’Hare Gibson, Lexington Student presentations and Special Needs Arts Program (SNAP) Sing Along Chorus.

Volunteer activities throughout Lexington, Waltham (YMCA) and Brighton (Boston)

  • NEW! Martin Luther King Day Gathering for Lexington Seniors: Honoring His Legacy, Continuing His Message of Sharing. 1:00-3:00 p.m. Brookhaven, 1010 Waltham Street, Lexington, MA Lexington senior residents are invited for music, refreshments, and reflections on what Martin Luther King means to us personally and to our nation. Guests are asked to bring donations of new products such as household cleaning and hygiene products, full-sized bed sheets, coffee mugs, gift cards, art and decor for apartments, or money donations for Bedford Green Apartments, a veterans’ home.
  • NEW! Wood Furniture Donation for MA Coalition for the Homeless. 1-3 p.m. at St. Brigid Church basement, 2001 Mass Ave., Lexington. Donate used wood furniture like chairs, desks, dressers, beds, etc. Kids’ bedroom furniture preferred.
  • YMCA Community Day and Free Clothes Boutique Donations. 1–3:30 p.m. at Waltham YMCA, 725 Lexington St, Waltham. Program of activities for children and adults (games, sports, reading, Zumba, story time, swimming, etc.) including lunch. Also seeking and accepting donations of gently used clothes and shoes for all ages for our complementary Free Clothes Boutique. Underprivileged families residing in Waltham and other communities’ hotels and shelters are invited to participate.
  • Charitable Donation Drop-offs. 9 a.m. –3 p.m. at Grace Chapel, 59 Worthen Road, Lexington. Donate non-perishable food items for the Lexington Food Pantry; new toys for Birthday Wishes; books, DVDs, CDs, video games and other media for More Than Words; gently-worn kids clothing (winter layers for kids preferred), well-preserved used toys for Cradles to Crayons, and monetary donations to keep our Day of Service impactful and vibrant. Note: For Cradles to Crayons ONLY, used toys can also be dropped off at the Lexington Police Department at 1575 Mass. Ave., Lexington.
  • Cradles to Crayons Task Force. 11 a.m. –1 p.m. at 155 North Beacon Street, Brighton, MA. Organize, distribute, clean/prep goods for reaching families in need in Boston area (Brighton warehouse).
  • Card-Making activity. 1–4 p.m. at Lexington Montessori School, 130 Pleasant Street, Lexington. Hand craft greeting cards for underserved populations such as Veterans, hospitalized children, and handicapped adults with performances by the Lexington High School Jazz Combo, the Music Makes Me Happy Chorus, and Orchestra Marhaba.
  • Making Birthday Party Kits for Homeless Children with Seniors. 1:30–3:30 p.m., Waltham Crossing 126 Smith St. Waltham. Visit with the senior residents of Waltham Crossing, an assisted-living community, and join them in preparing birthday party supply kits for homeless children in a family-friendly environment. On-site musical performance by Music Makes Me Happy Chorus.
  • Fleece Blanket, Scarf, and Hat Making. 1–3 p.m. at Grace Chapel, 59 Worthen Road, Lexington. Family-friendly activity making warm fleece items for guests at the Bristol Lodge Soup Kitchen, residents of the Citizens Inns, and underserved Lexington seniors through Meals on Wheels.
  • Sand for Seniors activities. 12-3 p.m. around Lexington. Help our senior citizens be safe during the winter season by delivering buckets of Sand for Seniors for winter driveways and walkways.
