We have a very wealthy society. No one need go hungry or avoid getting medical care because our society lacks resources. Instead, we squander those resources on inefficiencies or payoffs for those politically connected. And then our priorities and mechanisms for helping people are all screwed up. Finally, when a problem becomes too big to ignore, and politicians can no longer pass the buck to someone else, they try to raise taxes because surely that is the best solution. Like the criminal who said he robbed banks because that’s where the money is, politicians see taxpayers as the source of all revenue so if there is a shortfull, raising taxes must be the answer.
Fiscal conservatives are generally against raising taxes and I’d like to try to explain why in this article.
