Tourney-Crashing Lexington Softball Rolls On

Team notches another upset to reach semifinals; girls' tennis ousted.

Lexington High School's softball team keeps crashing the party in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) tournament.

The upstart, 12th-seeded Minutemen picked up another upset victory in the Division I North quarterfinals on Tuesday. It took 11 innings, but Lexington edged out a 1-0 win over fourth-seeded Newton North High at Newton.

As it stands, Lexington (14-8) is by far the lowest seed remaining in the semifinals. It takes on No. 1 Central Catholic (22-1) at Martin Field in Lowell tonight at 7 p.m.

The other semifinal matchup pits No. 2 Concord-Carlisle (21-1) against No. 3 Acton-Boxboro (19-3). That game will be played Thursday night in Lowell.

In other tournament action, Lexington's ninth-seeded girls' tennis team narrowly lost 3-2 to top-seeded Andover in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. The Minutemen finished the season with a 14-6 record.

Today, the Minutemen's boys' tennis team will look for a win over Andover, while trying to keep its undefeated season going in the Division I North semifinals. Second-seeded Lexington (21-0) hosts No. 3 Andover at 3:30 p.m.
