Tremont School Hires New Head of School
Ben Niles to lead progressive project based independent school in Lexington, MA

Tremont School, a progressive independent school based in Lexington, MA, is pleased to announce that Ben Niles has been hired as Head of School starting this summer. Ben was a transformative Head of School for the Randolph School in Wappingers Falls, New York, and a founding teacher at the innovative New Design High School in New York City.
Tremont School, “Designed to be Different,” offers an innovative, personalized Living Curriculum. Celebrating its seventh year, it is one of the youngest institutions to receive accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and College (NEASC). Tremont School attracts students of tremendous talent from across the region for its flexible and motivating approach, creating dynamic, self-directed learners supported by inspiring teachers.
After an exhaustive and highly competitive national search, the Tremont School community is delighted about Ben’s decision to join the school. As Board member and Head of School Search Committee Chair, Timothy Lee, commented, “Ben already has an incredible track record for developing innovative educational models that meet the needs of great students. He has the talent and experience to grow and sustain Tremont. We are all very excited to have him lead us forward.”

Ben feels a strong connection between his priorities as an educator and the priorities of the Tremont School, in particular the “focus on finding the best ways to work with kids on promoting social and emotional growth, and on individualized learning.” He went on to say, “It is clear that Tremont fills a critical gap in the region, serving talented students that learn best in this distinctive educational model,” and he is “particularly excited that Tremont is at the forefront of innovating experiential, collaborative education in the ways that the best schools in the country are just starting to implement.”
A graduate of Middlebury and Excelsior Colleges and a Vermont native, Ben is looking forward to returning to New England with his wife, Jean Burger, a special education teacher, and his two children.
