Gun Control: How Prevalent are Firearm-Related Deaths in Essex County?

A look at Essex County's firearm-related death statistics.

ESSEX COUNTY, MA—Gun control is an issue that has polarized the country, with many Americans either strongly for or against the strengthening of gun laws.

According to the Pew Research Center, only 27 percent of homes in the Northeast have at least one gun in the home. That figure is the lowest percentage out of any region in the country.

In turn, firearm-related deaths have actually decreased in recent years. According to the Health Indicators Warehouse, the rate of firearm-related deaths has decreased rather sharply since 2011.

In 2011, there were 4.10 deaths per 100,000 people in the county. Since then, the rate of firearm-related deaths has dramatically decreased to 2.60 deaths per 100,000 people in 2012 and 2013.
