The Lynnfield High boys tennis team beat visiting Masco, 4-1, on Tuesday to keep the Pioneer's playoff hopes alive.

With a record of 4-8, the prospects for the Lynnfield High boys tennis team don't appear very promising.

But the Pioneers took a big step on Tuesday, beating visiting Masco, 4-1, to keep the MIAA tournament within reach for Lynnfield.

James Hook won at first singles, 6-4, 7-6, 6-4, Nick Romano won at second singles, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 and Kevin Carr lost at third singles 3-6, 2-6.

"James Hook has done a great at job at first singles as a sophomore," said Lynnfield head coach John Harrison. "You don't have many first singles sophomores out there so that's tremendous that he's been playing competetively with his opponents."

The first doubles team of Andrew Fabiszewski and Pat Burgess won 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, while the second doubles team of Alex Rugato and Felix Funke won, 7-5, 1-6, 10-7.

"At first doubles our seniors have done a terrific job staying on task," said Harrison. "They've held down the fort and have a pretty good record this year."

Lynnfield will have to win out to finish the season in order to make the playoffs and will face a tough North Reading squad on the road today at 3:45 p.m.

"I'm hoping for a good match against Ipswich, who we beat previously," said Harrison. "If we can beat Malden Catholic twice in our double-header on Friday and then beat North Reading, we can make the playoffs so it's still in reach."
