Then and Now: Goodwin's Clam Shoppe

Over the past several months, we've seen some menus from several long-ago Lynnfield restaurants - and this week, one from the former Goodwin's Clam Shoppe is up for sale on eBay.

The place was located near the Lynn line off what was then known as the Newburyport Turnpike - the present-day Route 1. The menu dates back to about the 1940s, with the most expensive items being a couple of lobster dishes costing $1.80 each. The special dinner deal could be had for $1.15.

Other menu items are very much a product of their time. There are no “hamburgers.” Instead, you’d get “hamburg patties” with salad and “French Fried Potatoes.” All temptations to throw in some sort of “Slingblade” reference aside, the onion rings, like the "potaters," were called French Fried.

Non-seafood specialties included chicken livers in bacon and “minute steak,” which according to an online search was apparently another term for “cube steak.” You could also get chops (lamb or pork), a cold sliced ham or a cold sliced chicken plate – which actually sounds a heck of a lot better for you than a lot of stuff found on restaurant menus in 2013.
