VIDEO/PHOTOS: Clippers' Bats Sink Lynnfield Softball in Opener
The Lynnfield High softball team lost to visiting Newburyport, 13-1, on Monday.
It was a perfect day for softball on Monday, as the Lady Pioneers kicked off their season with a home game against Newburyport. But while the weather was hot, unfortunately so were the Clippers' bats, as Lynnfield lost 13-1.
"It was a little disappointing that we couldn't play better as a team," said head coach Peter Marinelli. "I don't think we played with confidence in the field."
Despite nine hits from the home team, the Pioneers could muster just one run seior Terri Whelan picked up a pair of hits and junior shortstop Kaie Rowe notched one. Junior Sam Shapleigh scored Lynnfield's lone run.

"We had nine hits," said Marinelli. "But we didn't get any when people were on base."
Rowe also had a solid day at the six hole, making several diving plays that helped keep even more runs off the board.
