MALDEN, MA — A police officer was struck by a vehicle on Friday during an altercation, according to Malden police.
Officers were assigned to assist a neighboring community’s police department with an investigation into a vehicle that crossed Malden’s border. They then attempted to stop the vehicle on the corner of Main Street and Bickford Road after identifying it. The driver reportedly drove off to escape the area after realizing police were nearby, and struck both the officer and an unmarked police vehicle from a neighboring community in the process.
“The vehicle continued to flee and was later abandoned in another city,” Malden police said in a statement. “The operator and passenger reportedly fled on foot.”
The department has not revealed the other agencies involved, citing the ongoing investigation as the reason why.
The Stoneham Police Department said it assisted the Massachusetts State Police on Friday after a vehicle wanted in connection with a drug investigation out of Everett was found abandoned on Lindenwood Road after the events in Malden took place.
“Through a subsequent search of the area, it appears that the suspect abandoned the vehicle and fled the area,” Stoneham Police Chief James O’Connor said in a statement.
Both Malden and Stoneham police said there is no ongoing threat to public safety regarding their respective incidents.
