Meet First Responders At Malden Public Safety Night Next Month

MALDEN, MA — Residents can meet first responders, explore emergency vehicles, and take part in safety activities when the city's annual Public Safety Day returns next month.

The free event will take place Sunday, Oct. 4, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Linden School Park, 29 Wescott St. The Malden Fire and Police Departments will host the eighth annual event in recognition of Fire Prevention Week.

Police, fire, EMS, and other public safety personnel will host demonstrations and vehicle displays throughout the event while allowing residents to get an up-close look at emergency vehicles and specialized equipment. A Touch-a-Truck area will give children the opportunity to explore fire engines and ladders, police cars, an ambulance, and Department of Public Works trucks.

Families will also be able to take part in safety activities for children, free car seat installations, and safety checks. Organizers have also planned face painting, music, free hot dogs, slush, pumpkins, giveaways, and other activities throughout the afternoon.

The event will also feature a free raffle giving attendees the chance to win one of five iPads. Public Safety Day is free and open to the public.

The event comes as communities across the country recognize Fire Prevention Week, which is observed annually in October in remembrance of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The fire killed more than 250 people and destroyed more than 17,400 structures across approximately 2,000 acres.

Malden residents 65 and older who own their homes can also schedule a free smoke detector check and installation as part of the city's fire prevention efforts. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 781-397-7383 ext. 2107.
