Malden Coffee Cafe Set To Reopen After 4-Month Closure
This business will finally resume brewing after it took a hit in May.
MALDEN, MA — A longtime local coffee shop is reopening next week after being closed for nearly four months following a multi-vehicle crash that damaged the business.
The New England Coffee Cafe and Store at 108 Charles St. will reopen on Monday, Sept. 14, according to an announcement from the business. It has been closed since a vehicle struck the location during a crash on May 19.
Police and emergency vehicles responded to the scene that afternoon to find a gray SUV and black sedan severely damaged. The sedan was stuck horizontally between the SUV and a tractor-trailer truck, which also sustained damage. Two people were transported to the hospital in the aftermath of the crash.

The driver of the sedan was seen being removed from the vehicle and placed on a stretcher before being taken to an ambulance. Malden Police Detective Stephen Munyon told Patch at the time that the coffee business was struck by one of the vehicles. The cause of the crash was not immediately known.
New England Coffee has operated in Malden for 60 years. The company was originally founded as the New England Tea & Coffee Company in Boston in 1916 before moving to 100 Charles St. in Malden in 1966 after outgrowing several previous locations. The facility has since grown to nearly an acre of office, production, and warehouse space.

The company's flagship retail store opened in 1986, serving factory-fresh coffee drinks to the local community. The third generation of the Kaloyanides family began running the business in 1996, and New England Coffee later expanded into supermarket and online sales. The company was acquired by Reily Foods Company in 2013 and celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2016.
