Banquet set May 4 for MHSAA Hall of Fame induction

Final details have been made to honor the newest members of the Malden High School Alumni Association’s Hall of Fame.

Tickets are still available for the May 4 induction ceremony and banquet at Anthony’s function facility on Canal Street.

Those wanting to place an ad in the event’s program book can still do so, but they must act quickly because the book has to go to the printer.

The honorees in the Class of 2018 include a former Malden Police chief, a former teacher who helped give life to the alumni group, a documentary film maker, an ambulance company humanitarian, a broadcasting legend, a civil rights pioneer, and a graphic designer who brought the cosmos to the blind.

Those to be inducted on May 4 are:

Education (posthumous) – Joanne Iovino, Class of 1964, former public school English teacher “Miss Assetta”1968-2005, founder of the MHS Alumni Association and initiator of the MHS Hall of Fame program.

Government – Edmund Trabucco, Class of 1934 -- Malden Police chief whose career in law enforcement spanned five decades. In 1952 he became the youngest lieutenant in history of Malden Police Department. He was a member of the board of directors of Malden YMCA and Malden Red Cross.

Arts -- Ann Carol Grossman, Class of 1965, created Umbrella Films. Her documentary film “The Powder and the Glory” became the inspiration for the Broadway musical, “War Paint.”

Business -- Diana Cataldo, Class of 1958, cofounder and treasurer of Cataldo Ambulance, a company that provides 911 services for 18 municipalities and has raised more than $600,000 for the Fight Against Cancer.

Media -- Nicholas “Dick” Robinson, Class of 1956 – Broadcasting legend in the 60’s and 70’s. Opened the Connecticut School of Broadcasting, responsible for thousands of broadcast careers.

Science -- Noreen Grice, Class of 1981 – Astronomy educator, founder of You Can Do Astronomy, LLC, graphic designer, planetarium manager, and author of five tactile astronomy books.

Community Service (posthumous) – John Hayes Holmes, Class of 1898 – Recipient of the Gandhi Peace Award, one of the founders of the NAACP and the ACLU, a Unitarian minister, and author of seven books.

The purpose of the Hall of Fame, founded in 2014, is to recognize MHS alumni for exceptional achievement in their chosen careers and/or for their outstanding contributions to the Malden community and beyond.
