The Beer Of Malden? How About Edgeworth?

Ever wonder what Malden tastes like? Instead of thinking it, try thinking it.

MALDEN, MA — What does Malden taste like? It's probably kind of a gross question if you spend too much time thinking of it. Instead of thinking it, how about drinking it?

Idle Hands this week canned its new Edgeworth brew, named after the neighborhood. And not only does founder Chris Tkach aim to capture the essence of the community, he hopes to give back to it, too.

"Two or three months ago we came up with idea of doing something more supportive of the Malden community," Tkach said. "We came up with the idea of brewing a very America-focused Pilsner named after one of the neighborhoods as a way to connect our brand with the city itself."

That thought led to the creation of Edgeworth, the proceeds of which partially get funneled back into the community. For every four-pack or pint bought at Idle Hands, a dollar goes to the community fund.

The money is going to the WWI Monument Refurbishment Project. The memorial, located in Devir Park, is being refurbished in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI this November. The current monument accounts for only 20 percent of the roughly 2,000 Malden resident who served in WWI.

So, how about that taste?

"It's a really light-style of beer - not light as in Miller Lite or anything,'" Tkach said. "Very very pale, nice easy drinking crisp malt characters. Crackers and doughy malts, but not overpowered by the malts. We layer on American hops to get citrus and floral character to the beer.

"It's a beer you'd drink after your shift. I envision 70-80 years ago this would be the beer they'd reach for after a long day's work at the Converse factory."

Edgeworth is 4.8 alcohol by volume. Try it out May 12 when Idle Hands celebrates the start of spring with MayFest.
