New City Council President and Subcommittee Members for 2018

2018 brings a new City Council president and sub-committee members

The 2018 City Council had its first meeting of business Tuesday January 9th at the Senior Center in Malden Square. On the agenda, the members were selected for the various sub-committees, by the new president, Councillor At-large Debbie DeMaria. It was her first official task in the new position, selected every year by the Council, and traditionally is a one year position that goes to senior Councillor who has yet to serve.

FINANCE - 6 Members

The Finance Committee shall have jurisdiction over all matters pertaining

to municipal finance , including accounts, bonds, claims, and salaries. The Finance Committee shall also make recommendations relative to allocation of Community Development Block Grant Funds and settlement of small claims against the city.

RULES & ORDINANCE - 5 Members

The Rules and Ordinance Committee shall have jurisdiction on all proposed changes to the Council rules, city ordinances and petitions to the state for home rule legislation; provided that, in accordance with state law, the Ordinance Committee shall not make a recommendation on a proposed amendment to the Zoning Ordinance before having received a written recommendation from the Planning Board, or until 21 days have expired from the close of the required public hearing and no recommendation has been received.

PERSONNEL/APPOINTMENTS - 5 Members

The Personnel Committee shall have jurisdiction over all matters related to salary classification, and employee evaluation for all positions that are appointed by the City Council, and shall review Annual Reports submitted by departments, boards and commissions.

The Standing Committees Public Works, Public Safety, Public Property and Cemetery Committee all are required 5 Members per City Council rules, but Council President DeMaria suggested only 3 members since the committees only met a total of 3 timers last year, according to meeting minutes made available online to the public.

Those committee member reduction will be the first order of business for the new Ordinance subcommittee this Tuesday January 16 at the Senior Center.

Also that night the Committee of the Whole will meet in Executive Session to discuss the Malden Police officer Amirault whistle-blower case against the City and Chief of Police Molis.

Also after the Committee of the Whole meeting will be the first working meeting for the new Malden Hospital Site Design Committee.
