Demolition Begins For the New Police Station on Eastern Avenue

Mayor Gary Christenson said it was a historic day in the city.

Malden Mayor Gary Christenson tweeted out a photo on Thursday morning that made a lot of folks happy.

“Historic moment for Malden as demolition begins for the new police station on Eastern Avenue!” tweeted Mayor Christenson

.State officials announced in December an additional $6 million in state funding for the Malden Center redevelopment plan, according to the city.

The plan, which the City Council put $12.5 million toward in November, calls for:

  • Malden City Hall and the Police Station to be torn down
  • Pleasant Street to be reconnected
  • A mixed-use-development, containing the new City Hall, to be built on the site
  • A new Police Station to be built at 794-838 Eastern Ave.

A private developer, Jefferson Apartment Group, plans to invest roughly $100 million to purchase the municipal site and build 234 market rental units, 25,000 square feet of retail space , 42,000 square feet of office space, which will be the new City Hall, and 276 parking spaces.

The state funding comes through the MassWorks Infrastructure Program. The state gave Malden an initial $3 million for the roughly $30 million project in November 2013 through this same program.
