Howie Newman and Family at Malden Summer Concert Series July 26

It will be a real family affair at the City of Malden Summer Concert series on Thursday, July 26.

Singer-songwriter Howie Newman, a longtime Malden resident, will be joined by his son and daughter at the popular concert series at City Hall Plaza from 6-8 p.m. They’ll perform well-known cover tunes plus Newman’s own funny songs. The concert is free and the material is suitable for all ages.

Newman will be accompanied by his son Keith, 20, on flute and vocals, and daughter Jen, 25, on vocals and percussion. Both are graduates of Malden High. Keith (Class of 2010) is a junior at Cornell and Jen is a doctoral candidate at the University of Oklahoma.

“It’s always a treat when I get to play with my kids,” says Newman. “They’re away at school most of the year so we only get to do this once in a while. They add a lot to the show, with their musical talents and energy.”

Along with classics by the Beatles, Barenaked Ladies, Eric Clapton and others, the trio will perform some of Newman’s amusing compositions, including “My Baby Can’t Parallel Park,” which was featured on NPR’s Car Talk and is included on his recently released live CD, You Shoulda Been There.

Newman’s original songs are up-tempo and catchy, and he keeps things lively with short comedy bits and lots of audience participation. Some of the songs he’ll be singing can be found on his full-length CD, Trust Me, You’ll Like It, as well as his two baseball albums, Baseball’s Greatest Hits, Volumes 1 and 2. All of the CDs are available at the Malden Public Library.
