The City of Malden will observe the tenth anniversary of the worst terrorist attack in United States history with a Memorial Walk at Malden Government Center Plaza beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 11, 2011. Mayor Richard C. Howard will start the day of reflection and Malden’s Veterans’ Services Officer Kevin Jarvis will speak.
Residents will then be invited to join in the Memorial Walk as it proceeds down Pleasant Street to the Immaculate Conception Parish, 600 Pleasant Street, where the Knights of Columbus Council #13966 is hosting an anniversary Blue Mass at 11:00 a.m. in honor of Malden and Medford’s first responders. The Blue Mass is a Knights of Columbus tradition dating back to 1934 as a way of honoring police, fire and all others who have given the ultimate sacrifice in the name of their community. The mass will be followed by a reception brunch in the parish hall.
The day will conclude at the Irish American Club, 177 West Street, for A Community Reflection of September 11th to remember the event that changed our lives, to honor those we’ve lost and to celebrate the resiliency of our Nation. This event, which runs from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m., is a collaboration between the Malden Irish American Club and the Irish International Immigrant Center. The day will consist of the sharing of experiences from September 11, 2001 and traditional Irish music with Uilleann Pipes.
We hope you can join us for this solemn tribute. If you need further information, please call Carol Ann Desiderio in the Veterans’ Services Department at 781-397-7139 or email cdesiderio@cityofmalden.org.
