Fire at Pumpsy's Liquor Store Monday

Malden firefighters responded to two recent fires.

Early Monday morning, firefighters responded to Pumpsy’s Liquor Store at the corner of Highland Avenue and Whitman Street. There, they found “heavy fire,” and the fire “heavily damaged” the building, according to Malden Deputy Fire Chief Leonard Dunn III.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, he said.

On Friday evening, firefighters responded to a Truman Drive residence for a heavy fire in a basement apartment. The fire was contained to the apartment and appeared accidental, Dunn said.

A smoke detector alerted residents in the home and they were able to exit safely, he said.
