MALDEN, MA — Gary Christenson was re-elected to another term as Malden mayor Tuesday. Councilors-at-Large Debbie DeMaria, Craig Spadafora and Stephen Winslow were re-elected as well.
In Ward 3, Amanda Linehan was elected to the City Council, edging out Julianne Orsino 831-800. City Councilors Barbara Murphy and Jadeane Sica were re-elected in Wards 5 and 8, respectively.
Incumbent School Committee members Robert McCarthy Jr., Leonard Iovino and John Froio were re-elected, and newcomers Joseph Gray and Michelle Luong were elected in Wards 6 and 7.
Voters endured periods of heavy rain Tuesday. Outside the Ferryway School, groups showed up in support of both Christenson and his opponent, John Matheson. Gail Poirier said she has supported Christenson since he first ran for School Committee.
"You can't find anyone more dedicated than Gary," she said. "What other mayor picks up trash on their way home from work?"
Mike Caprigno said he voted for Christenson in the past but believes he has been a "disappointment." He cited eliminating trash bags and improving the city's infrastructure with money from Encore Boston Harbor as issues that are important to him. According to Caprigno, Christenson's plan to get rid of trash bags would add up to $20 to his water bill a month.
"I think Gary forgot about individual homeowners," Caprigno said.
