JV Field Hockey - Coach: Kim Barber

The Malden JV Field Hockey team won one and lost two last week.

The Golden Tornadoes began by defeating Salem 1-0 last Monday in Salem. Goaltender Emily Moran held the Witches of Salem scoreless.

β€œEmily had solid clears in the shutout,” commented Coach Kim Barber.

Tamires Matos and Julie Bourgea contributed defensively throughout the match-up. The team closed out the week with a loss at Bishop Fenwick and at home against Peabody.

Coach Barber stated, "We take each of the wins and losses and learn from them. I've been very proud of how the girls have played so far.” Β

Barber mentioned that the offensive play of Robyn Santo and Casey Arsenault, two first year players, has shown improvement and will ultimately be a key to the success of the JV offensive line.

Varsity Girls’ Soccer - Coach: Lindsey O’Leary

On Wednesday, the Malden High girls soccer team suffered a tough loss against Somerville, 4-1.

Somerville came out strong, and was able to score their first goal just two minutes into the first half. After regrouping, Malden pulled together and created some offensive opportunities. Junior Anita Caceda was able to capitalize scoring a beautiful goal.

β€œThough Malden worked hard, Somerville dominated the first half,” commented Coach Lindsey O’Leary. The Tornadoes came out strong in the second half, playing their best half yet this season. Juniors Ashly Brun and Amalia Quesada Nylen had some great shots just outside the eighteen.

In addition to a hard working offense, Malden's defense never gave up. Junior defenders Lorna Ibanda and Stevie Klein stayed tough and were key players throughout the game. As always, junior goalie Tina Ascolillo made some incredible saves.
