Malden High Students Tackle Addiction

The freshman class completed their Generation Citizen Project.

The following is from the City of Malden:

The Malden High School Freshman class completed their Generation Citizen Project on the topic of addiction. Mayor Gary Christenson and Malden Overcoming Addiction President Paul Hammersley recently attended the presentation of Mr. Ellsworth Fersch’s History class to hear their findings from their Generation Citizen project. Generation Citizen, a non-profit organization works to provide 8th and 9th graders with a civics education. Students learn the skills necessary to participate as engaged citizens and how to take effective political and social action. They work together to complete a project on an issue they feel is important within their community.

The Malden High students conducted research and presented their findings on the root causes of addiction. They had questions about the City’s efforts to tackle the epidemic and offered ways to help address the issue at a school level. “This is a great way for our students to get involved in issues that concern their community,” said Mayor Christenson. “I commend their research and their commitment to the important topic of addiction.”
