Malden Man Charged in Quadruple Shooting in Chinatown

The man, on federal probation for a firearms charge, has been held on $1 million bail.

A 29-year-old Malden man allegedly fired a barrage of shots in Boston’s Chinatown neighborhood early Sunday morning, striking four men.

Kareem Smith was arrested and charged with armed assault with intent to murder (four counts), assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (four counts), unlawful possession of a firearm as a second offense, carrying a loaded firearm and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.

Boston Municipal Court Judge Thomas Horgan held Smith, who was on federal probation for a firearms charge, on $1 million cash bail, according to authorities.

Smith allegedly opened fire near Essex and Edinboro streets just before 3 a.m. Sunday. Police responded and heard as many as 15 gunshots, authorities said. Dozens of people were running and taking cover when police arrived.

According to authorities, a 22-year-old man was struck in the chest, a 24-year-old man in the leg, a 25-year-old man in the buttocks and a 27-year-old man in the abdomen. All four were transported to nearby hospitals and are expected to survive, authorities said.

Smith allegedly use a 5.7 semiautomatic Fabrique Nationale handgun, which police recovered on Oxford Street. He is due back in court Sept. 17.
