Malden to NH Police Has Fatal End: Suspect Identified

A suspect wanted for sexual assault in Maine allegedly shot at troopers in pursuit and died after crashing in New Hampshire.

MALDEN, MA — Authorities have identified the man at the center of an hour-long pursuit that originated in Malden, took police through Merrimack Valley and ended with his death in New Hampshire. Michael Brown, 40, of Presque Isle, Maine, was wanted on sexual assault, firearms and stolen motor vehicle charges.

Brown allegedly fired shots at troopers in pursuit before crashing a stolen pick-up truck a tree in Newton, NH. He allegedly fired more shots at police after the crash and sustained a gunshot injury in the ensuing shootout. He was pronounced dead at the scene, reports say.

Authorities told reporters Brown's wounds do not appear to have been self-inflicted.

Brown was initially spotted around 11:10 p.m. in Malden, where local police tried to pull him over. Law enforcement had been notified that he was in the possession of a stolen handgun.

Brown took off and allegedly fired shots at troopers, who chased him up through the Merrimack Valley and into New Hampshire. Police say Brown spent some time driving the wrong way on I-495 in Amesbury.
