Malden Police Cracking Down On Fireworks

MALDEN, MA — The latest issue keeping Malden awake at night: fireworks. Police said Monday they've been seeing a rise in complaints and reports of fireworks, which are illegal in Massachusetts. It's not just Malden residents who are suffering; communities across the North Shore have reported an uptick in fireworks, and officials can't figure out why.

"I have never seen this level of sustained use of fireworks for this period of time," Police Chief Kevin Molis said Monday. "We've been looking into it, and there's really no definitive answer."

Selling, possessing or purchasing fireworks is illegal in Massachusetts, but they are easily and legally bought in New Hampshire. In Massachusetts, fines range from $10 to $100 for use or possession of fireworks.

Beyond that, they're unsafe, Molis reminded the public Monday. They pose a fire hazard and can seriously harm those setting them off.

Molis asked the public to help police identify where fireworks are being launched.

"If you do hear fireworks, or know of them, give us a call," Molis said.
