Malden Re-Declaring Independence

The document showing the vote of the Malden townspeople in May of 1776 will be read to the public this month.

MALDEN, MA — In honor of Independence Day, the City of Malden is invited to gather on the lawn of the library (Salem & Ferry Street) at 5 p.m. on Friday, June 30, for a recital of the Town Instructions as they were written on May 27, 1776.

Local historian and period actor Tom Coots will perform the reading; the document itself was unanimously voted on by the people of Malden to be delivered to the Second Continental Congress via their representative Ezra Sargeant all those decades ago. The vote renounced the Colony's tires to Great Britain and made official their wish to become independent; it is considered a precursor to the Declaration of Independence.
