Malden Reads Movie Night at The Malden Public Library

Free Movie Night

Join us on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at 6:00-8:45pm in the Maccario Room for the Malden Public Library’s second Malden Reads film screening. We will be showing a documentary about the Northampton, MA based singing group of senior citizens called Young@Heart. The average age of the members is 80 and they sing songs by artists ranging from James Brown and Bob Dylan to Sonic Youth and The Clash, while challenging stereotypes of the elderly.

The movie explores some of the themes in Malden Reads 2017 book selection, A Man Called Ove, by Fredrik Backman--universal themes of coping with grief and loss, the importance of community and intergenerational connections, overcoming challenges and learning about personal growth.

Rotten Tomatoes writes, “Full of endearing characters, this doc about a choir of "seniors behaving badly" is uplifting and delightful.” The Toronto Star writes, “One of the most remarkable scenes you will ever see in a documentary is the chorus of elderly men and women—average age of 80—singing Bob Dylan’s ‘Forever Young’ before convicts in a Massachusetts penitentiary.” Richard Roeper said, “I love this film!”
