Malden Remembers Those Taken by Addiction

On Sunday, Malden Overcoming Addiction hosted a candlelight vigil dedicated to the more than 100 loved ones recently lost.

MALDEN, MA – The Malden community gathered Sunday evening to remember those recently lost to addiction.

Approximately 175 community members converged on Malden High School at the event, organized by Malden Overcoming Addiction. At the vigil, the names of more than 100 people were read, and music from Malden High graduate Nick Hames led a candlelight march around the school.

Attendees heard powerful speeches from pastor Dan Ko of the Seven Mile Road Church, Mayor Gary Christenson and Chief of Police Kevin Mollis, as well as stories from a parent who lost a child and a woman who has been in recovery for five years.

While the crowd remembered loved ones taken by addiction, there was also a strong message of hope. In addition, those in attendance were given a slew of resources to address addiction, and about 35 people were trained on how to administer Narcan, a combatant for opioid overdoses.
