Malden Represented At State Of The Union Address

A student gun control activist from Malden High joined Congresswoman Katherine Clark Tuesday in Washington.

MALDEN, MA — A Malden student gun control activist was on hand for President Trump's State of the Union address Tuesday. Angela Tejada-Soliz joined Congresswoman Katherine Clarke in Washington.

Clark earlier in the day reintroduced legislation that would prohibit people who have been convicted of a misdemeanor for animal cruelty from owning a gun. The bill, called the Animal Violence Exposes Real Threat (AVERT) of Future Gun Violence Act, can be read here.

"The inaction silently perpetuating gun violence has come to an end," said Clark in a press release. "Thanks to the survivors, families and activists, like Angela, the House is now in a position to move forward commonsense reforms, like the AVERT Act. Lives have been lost, families have been destroyed, and communities have been torn apart by gun violence. The time for action is now."

"It’s easy to say, 'it won’t happen here,' and I am sure the students in Florida felt the same way," Tejada-Soliz said in a press release. "But gun violence happens everywhere in this country because of the current gun laws. That’s why we organized a walkout in Malden. Young people are being affected and we can’t vote, but we can make our voices heard. We won’t stop speaking out until something changes."
