Malden was well represented at this weekend's Middlesex Youth Soccer League Commissioner's Cup. The culmination of the Spring season, just getting to the Cup tournament means a team has had a very successful season. Along with all three Malden Youth Soccer Boys U14 teams (under 14 years old), one Girls U14 team, two Boys U12 teams, and the Boys U18 team went to the Cup.
The Boys U14-3 team, coached by Robert Navas and David Cartledge, and the Boys U14-2 team, coached by Mario Riquelme and Esad Sinanovic, vied for the Division 4 title. The title was settled by an exciting head-to-head Malden final on Sunday in the mid-day heat. The BU14-2 team, which calls themselves the Malden Rockers, got their third win of the tournament. With no goals scored against them, they are the 2013 Middlesex Division 4 champions. The BU14-3 team walked away with their pride intact after a good showing at the tournament and a great season.
After a 9-0 season, the Boys U12-3 team, coached by Dean Martins and Eric Lombardi, lost their first two tournament games in matches determined in the last minutes against Tewksbury and Burlington. They came back to tie their third game, against Woburn, 1-1.
For Division 1 and Division 2 teams, this weekend's games were single elimination play-offs that determined the towns that will represent Middlesex in the Massachuestts Tournament of Champions. The BU12-1 team, coached by Scott Leonard and Gilson Vieira, laid it all on the line but weren't able to come up with the win against Lowell. GU14-1 was the only Malden girls team to make it to the Commissioners Cup. Coached by Jose Zayas and Kenneth Antonucci, Wilmington knocked them out of the running.
The BU14-1 team, coached by Johnny Ospina, won an exhausting game against Lowell in overtime on Saturday. On Sunday, they lost to Tewksbury but clinched the wild card and so proceed to MTOC. The BU18 team, coached by Foster Morales and Jorge Gonzalez, beat Wilmington and so joins Ospina's team at next weekend's state-wide tournament.
