Malden Sports Roundup: A Big Week for Malden Softball

The Malden High softball team scored a combined 35 runs in two big wins this week.

The bats came alive for the Malden High softball team this week as the Golden Tornadoes beat up on Melrose and Greater Boston League rival Somerville this week. 

Against Melrose, the first inning started off with a bang for both teams with Malden Scoring five runs on hits from juniors Rebecca Krigman and Emily Hoffman, who were chased home on a two-run triple from senior Renee Santo. In the bottom half, Melrose came back with four runs on a grand slam by catcher Athena Ziavaras.

From then on it was all Tornadoes, with four runs in the second on hits from Santo, junior Kiara Amos, and sophomores Bridget Furlong and Jessalyn Brown and senior Ashley Powers. After the first inning Amos went on to a 13 strikeout performance to shutdown Melrose for the remainder of the game.

Malden added five more runs in the third on hits from senior Francesca Richardson, Krigman, Hoffman, Santo, Furlong and a solo blast from sophomore Hannah Calderone. Malden closed out the scoring with a couple of runs in the sixth and seventh to earn the victory.

Against Somerville, Kiara Amos struckout 12 to go along with 15 Malden hits including two home runs by Renee Santo. Sophomores Bridget Furlong went 4-for-4 including a triple and a double and three RBI and Jessalyn Brown batted 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI. 

Junior Emily Hoffman finished 2-for-4 while senior Ashley Powers and sophomores Marissa Lally and Emily Moran each chipped in with a hit.

Malden ended with week with a more modest, 4-0, win against Billerica on Friday and now sits at 6-1 and 2-0 in the GBL.

Tough Week for Malden Lacrosse

While the softball team has been on a  roll, things have not gone so well for the Malden High lacorsse team. The Golden Tornadoes lost three games this week to Melrose, Saugus and Bedford. 

"We struggle with some of the pieces of the game," said head coach Brenden Maney. "However, we never struggle with the effort.  They boys always play hard, and compete regardless of the score.  We are getting better each week and know that at the end of the season we will have made tremendous progress."

Daniel Glynn, Paul Kiernen, and Devind Fitzpatrick all scored for Malden this week while goalie
