Malden Sports Roundup: Girls Lacrosse Thumps Cambridge

The Malden High girls lacrosse team beat GBL rival Cambridge, 23-11, on Tuesday.

The Malden High School Varsity Girls Lacrosse team enjoyed its second victory of the season on Tuesday with a 23-11 win against perennial contender Cambridge Rindge & Latin at Pine Banks.

Malden goaltender Tina Ascolillo performed superbly in the Tornado net blocking shot after shot put on her by the Cambridge attackers. Assisting Ascolillo in that effort were Malden defensive players Malorie Macdonald, Commie Ayuk, Navjoyt Bola, and Tina Pham. “A lot of credit goes to our defense,” commented Coach Briggs. “Stevie Klein and Amanda Ramsey, our mid-defense did a great job shutting down the Cambridge advance.”

Scoring for the Tornadoes were Attacks Anita Caceda (8 goals) and Captain Patricia Aguinaldo (6 goals), Mid Attacks Stacy Souza (4 goals) and Paula Suarez (2 goals), and Center Captain Mandy Liao with 3 goals. Contributing to the win over the Falcons were Britney Powers, Debbie Ly, Joyce Ly and Sharon Lee.

Mystic Valley Lacrosse Suffers First Loss

The Mystic Valley Eagles suffered their first loss of the year at home on Wednesday, 9-4, to the five time defending league champion Shawsheen Rams. Shawsheen went up 2-0 early in the first quarter, but Mike Pascal answered with a drive to the net and a score.

The Eagles trailed 2-1 after one quarter. Shawsheen took a 3-1 lead midway through the second quarter but Mystic Valley answered again with a Jonathan Walker goal and went into halftime down 3-2. The teams traded goals in the third quarter, but Mystic Valley seemed to have the edge in momentum. Jonathan Walker scored a transition goal in the early part of the fourth quarter to tie the game for the first time at 4-4.

On the ensuing faceoff Shawsheen pushed a fastbreak goal of their own and took the lead for good at 5-4. When the final whistle blew it was a 9-4 game. John Dion was sensational in goal, making several point-blank saves to thwart the high-scoring Rams of Shawsheen.

"I am proud of the effort that the boys displayed today," said coach MartyHorkan. "Shawsheen is a well-coached, athletic team and we hung right in there with them today".

Mystic Valley Baseball Wins

The Mystic Valley baseball team beat North Shore Tech, 7-4, on Wednesday, giving North Shore its first loss of the season.The game was tied 4 -4 in the fifth inning when Joey Foley hit a two-run double putting the Eagles up 6-4. Patrick Appleby then singled home Foley to give the Eagle a three-run lead which they would hold on to for the rest of the game.

Patrick Holden pitched a complete game picking up the win.The Eagles are now 5-4 overall and 3-2 in the league. The Eagles travel to Archbishop Williams tomorrow for a tough, non-conference matchup.
