Malden Students Become Senators for a Day

Dozens of students from Malden gathered Thursday as part of a mentoring session on civic participation and community leadership.

MALDEN, MA - Dozens of students from Malden High and the Malden Teen Center gathered Thursday with Congresswoman Katherine Clark and State Rep. Steve Ultrino as part of a mentoring session on civic participation and community leadership.

The learning experience took place at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute's replica of the U.S. Senate Chamber, where students learned and debated about current-day legislation such as immigration reform and drones.

Clark spoke on how important it was to use “your voice to empower positive change in our communities.”

Through the Senate Immersion Module (SIM) program, students can be come "Senators-for-a-day" deliberating and negotiating as they consider both historic issues and current topics .
