Salemwood School 7th Graders were recently surprised by a visit from Channel 7 News upon learning about the students’ diligent efforts to raise funds to help a boy across the world suffering from a rare eye cancer.
The young boy, David, is from Ghana and became known to the students through teacher Ms. Jennifer Hedrington whose sons currently live in Ghana where her parents are missionaries. The students have been in regular communication with David through video messages. As a result of many fundraisers, including selling pizza and soliciting items to be raffled, students have raised more than $6,650 for a surgery which will provide David with a prosthetic eye.

A team of doctors have agreed to perform the surgery free of charge and others have offered to match donations to assist the boy and his family with future medical costs.
Channel 7 contacted Ms. Hedrington to acknowledge the wonderful efforts of the students in an upcoming Class Act segment. The Channel 7 News team surprised the students during an assembly to commend them for their humanitarian work. The segment will air on June 2nd during the 6 AM broadcast.
