Malden Youth Soccer Kicks Off Spring Season

The Malden Youth Soccer League kicked off the spring season last weekend.

Note: The following was submitted by Malden Youth Soccer Publicity Coordinator and coach Kim Brookes.

Malden Youth Soccer's spring season got off to a great start this past weekend as 460 Malden children ages 4-17 dribbled, passed, stole balls, shot, missed and scored.

At Amerige, the field glimmered with colorful U6 uniforms. The Orange Tigers practiced moving balls around cones, while the Sky Blues kicked towards the goal and the Red Dragons played "red light, green light." Praise from coaches and parents mingled with squeals and shouts of players' delight.

Meanwhile, Malden's U10 and U16 travel teams both lost and won against other towns throughout Middlesex County. All three boys U12 teams had a successful day. BU12-1 persevered in a hard-fought contest over Medford 3-1.  Malden was led by a stout defense and strong work in midfield to hinder Medford's passing attack.  Although BU12-2 players missed over ten shots on goal, the Malden defense dominated as they beat Melrose 1-0.

The boys U12-3 team trounced Medford 8-0, perhaps making them a target in their division. In U16 play, a promising Malden girls team mostly comprised of Malden High School players, tied Somerville 0-0. The boys team, which came together just days before the deadline, proved their worth against Everett, 6-1.
