Movie Night At The Malden Public Library

Free Movie Night

Join us for Movie Night at the Malden Public Library on Wednesday, January 25, 2017, from 6:00-7:45pm. We will be showing a recent movie based on the true story about the offshore oil rig, Deepwater Horizon

, which exploded in 2010 and created the worst oil spill in American history. The film stars Mark Wahlberg, Kate Hudson, Gina Rodriguez, Kurt Russell, and John Malkovich. It is directed by Peter Berg.

Mike Williams (Wahlberg), the Chief Electrical Engineer on Deepwater Horizon finds himself fighting for his life and for the lives of his colleagues when a bad, bureaucratic decision and a terrible mistake causes over 210,000,000 million gallons of oil to gush into the Gulf of Mexico only 40 miles off the Louisiana shore. Eleven crewmen died on April 20, 2010, and in a brave effort Mike Williams and others were able to help save the lives of over 100 others. ABC TV writes of the movie that it is, “Epic and entertaining. One of the most important films of the year.” Lindsey Bahr of the Associated Press writes, “[the movie] achieves that impossible balance of being a tribute to the workers who both perished and survived that day and a searing critique of the rotten system that put them there in the first place.”

Rotten Tomatoes gives the film an 83% approval rating and writes that the movie is a “gripping-action thriller.” CinemaScore gives the film an A-.
