Mystic Valley Varsity Girls' Basketball Loses to Shawsheen

The coach feels that if the team builds off their first-half successes they can be a better team going forward.

The Mystic Valley girls’ varsity basketball team fell to 10-6 on the season after a 65-40 loss at home to Shawsheen Tech yesterday.

The Lady Eagles came out strong against one of the best teams in Division 4, taking an early lead, finishing the first quarter with the lead, 16-14.

In the second quarter the Shawsheen full court pressure defense forced the Lady Eagles into costly turnovers that proved to be the teams undoing. However, the girls remained in the game trailing by 9 (31-22) at the halfway point. The third quarter was more of the same though, and Shawsheen continued to increase their lead.

Coach Jason Cantwell pointed out a lot of positives after the game: “The girls proved a lot to me today. One, the first half proved that when we are smart with the ball, we can play with most teams. If we just did a better job of not trying to force the issue the final result would have been much different. We played against a much deeper team that is one of the favorites in Division 4 North, without our leading scorer, and proved we belonged on the court with them in the first half. If we can build off of the first half we will be a better team going forward.”

Offensively, the Lady Eagles were led by Jordan Sullivan’s 14 points (4 three-pointers) followed by Paulina Petras 9, Meghan Foley 7 and Rachel Tortora 6.

The girls return to action Friday, at PMA of Methuen, when they can position themselves for a shot at a league title.
