Obituary: Gertrude E. (Wilder) Overlan, Born in Malden in 1912

Overlan was a lifelong Malden resident.

Gertrude E. (Wilder) Overlan, a lifelong resident of Malden, passed away at the Glen Ridge Nursing Home on Sunday, March 23.

She was born in Malden in 1912, one of 11 children to Miles S. and Kathleen (Watts) Wilder. Gertrude was also raised and educated in Malden. After her marriage to Cornelious F. Overlan, the two settled down in Malden to raise their family.

Over the years, Gertrude worked as a waitress in different restaurants, including Chicland in Saugus and Trickers in Everett. She was dedicated member of Sacred Hearts Parish in Malden, and she faithfull prayed the Rosary every day. She also enjoyed knitting and, in years past, was an avid bowler. 

She is survived by her children, Jacqueline Russell of Concord, N.H., and Joyce Minasain of Lynnfield, her sister Margaret Smith of California, 15 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, and five great great grandchildren.

Getrude was preceded in death by her husband Cornelius, her daughters Joan Hampton and Judith Symmonds, her son Neil A. Overlan, and her siblings, Roland Wilder, Miles Wilder, William Wilder, Charles Wilder, Leah “Paulie” Leary, Alice Wilder, Sarah Donnelly, Mary Cersosimo and Kathleen Larson.

Funeral services will be held from the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem St., Malden on Saturday, March 29, at 10:00 a.m. followed by a mass of Christian burial in Sacred Hearts Church, 297 Main St., Malden, at 11 a.m. Interment to follow in Forest Dale Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday, March 28, from 4-8 p.m.
