Obituary: Peggy Harmon

Harmon died Thursday, Nov. 27.

Peggy Thelma (Gray) Harmon passed away Thursday, Nov. 27, 2014, in the Glen Ridge Nursing Care Center. She was 92.

Born in Boston on April 8, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Hubert C. Gray and Ethel M. (Angus) Gray. Peggy was raised and educated in Lawrence and was a graduate of Lawrence High School. She continued her education at both Chamberlain Junior College as well as Northeastern.

On June 20, 1947, she married Edward E. Harmon, Jr. and the couple lived in Boston, Lawrence, Lynn, Cambridge, Haverhill and New York before finally settling in Malden in 1948 to raise their two sons. Peggy began working for Jordan Marsh Department Store in Malden as a sales clerk before moving on to work as a data processor for the Federal Government for the Veterans Administration in the John F. Kennedy Building in Boston. She later transferred to the I.R.S. in Andover, then to the Chelsea Naval Hospital until it was closed by former President Nixon. Peggy then returned to Ft. Devens in Ayer before retiring from the Department of Defense at the Boston Army Base. In her later years, she spent time as a Malden Crossing Guard in Maplewood Square.

In her spare time, Peggy devoted her time to the V.F.W. She served as president in 1967 for the Ladies Auxiliary in V.F.W. Post #639 in Malden, president of the Ladies Auxiliary of District 18 V.F.W. in 1976 and was the Middlesex County president of the Ladies Auxiliary in 1977. Peggy was also a communicant of Sacred Hearts Church in Malden and was a one time member of the choir. Peggy also had a fond love of horse-back riding.

Funeral from the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem St., Malden, on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2014, at 9 a.m. followed by a mass of Christian burial in Sacred Hearts Church, 297 Main St., Malden, at 10 a.m. Fr. Mark DeAngelis, pastor of Sacred Hearts ,will be presiding. Burial will follow in the Forest Dale Cemetery, Malden. Visitation will be held in the funeral home on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2014, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
