Plan to Demolish Malden City Hall, Police Station Moves Forward
A private developer, which now owns the property, is planning to build a mixed-use development and re-open Pleasant Street to traffic.

The Malden City Council took two key votes Tuesday night, moving the plan to demolish Malden City Hall and the police station forward, according to the city.
The council voted unanimously (11-0) to authorize $12.5 million in bonding for the acquisition of land and construction of a new police station and to purchase roughly 42,000 square feet in the new mixed-use development, replacing city hall and the police station, for the new city hall.
In addition, the council voted unanimously to authorize Malden Mayor Gary Christenson to sign a Letter of Intent (a precursor to a Purchase of Sale Agreement) for the new city hall space.

The city sold city hall to a private developer, Jefferson Apartment Group, last February.
Under the developer’s current proposal, Pleasant Street would be re-opened to traffic and a mixed-use development would be built on the two-acre site at 200 Pleasant St. with: 234 rental units, 25,000 square feet of retail space and 276 parking spaces. Jefferson Apartment Group is planning to invest $100 million into the project.
