Time to gift ‘named’ seats at MHS

This gift-giving season is the perfect time to “Name a Seat” in Malden High School’s Jenkins Auditorium to memorialize someone special while funding scholarships and helping out needy students.

Under the fund-raising campaign sponsored by the MHS Alumni Association, the bronze-like name plates – which cost $100 each -- are to be engraved and affixed permanently to seats in the auditorium recently restored to its art deco grandeur.

Diane Lind, ’54, MHSAA vice president and chair of the seat-naming campaign, said nearly 500 of the 900 seats in the auditorium have already been spoken for, but the naming rights for the rest are now up for grabs.

While alums generally have bought seats for themselves or to honor loved ones, families, friends, athletes, teachers or even organizations, Lind said that what should be remembered most is that the money raised through this effort goes directly to scholarships and programs that help students in need.

The MHSAA board itself recently decided to buy a seat to honor the late Dr. George Holland, ’55, founding president of the alumni group and former superintendent of schools in Malden.
