Cuts Nearly Balance Mansfield's School Budget

The town is about $51,000 away from a balanced school budget.

Efforts to balance the Mansfield schools budget for fiscal year 2016 are almost complete.

Business manager Edward Vozzella said at Tuesday’s school committee meeting that about $1.26 million in cuts have been made with a goal of $1.32 million.

Vozzella said he is confident the budget gap will be closed, noting that the process is moving faster than in previous years.

Cuts to the budget include $856,000 in new teaching positions, $60,000 in savings in consolidating a position in the building and grounds department, and $143,000 in retirements. Elementary teaching positions are expected to be reduced by three in response to declining enrollment figures.

Voters will have their say on the budget at the annual Town Meeting to be held in the Spring.
