UPDATE: Driver in Serious Crash Charged with OUI

John Pucci was ejected from his SUV after crashing his vehicle at Canoe River bridge.

MANSFIELD, MA - A North Attleboro man involved in a serious car crash in Mansfield early Wednesday morning will face charges.

John Pucci, 25, was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, two counts of reckless operation of a motor vehicle, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, failure to stop for police, three counts of failure to stop at a red light, speeding, marked lanes violation, possessing an open container of alcohol inside a motor vehicle, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.

Shortly after 1 a.m., an officer at the intersection of Route 106 and North Main Street observed an SUV speed through a red light directly in front of him. The officer followed the vehicle, activating his emergency lights in an attempt to pull over the car. The vehicle, however, turned onto Pratt Street, reaching an estimated speed of 95-100 mph, according to police.

Police observed the vehicle again travel through a red light, this time at the at the intersection of Hope and Pratt Streets. As the vehicle traveled past the Department of Public Works, Pucci allegedly threw an item out of the SUV, swerved off the roadway, and struck a guard rail at the Canoe River bridge. The vehicle then struck the bridge abutment and flipped end over end, splitting into three sections.

Pucci was ejected from his vehicle and was located pinned between the bridge and a drainage pipe. He was found with serious injuries and was taken by MedFlight to Massachusetts General Hospital.

No other victims were involved in the crash.

The road was closed for about five hours due to an investigation by Mansfield police.
