Homeless Men Arrested Following Alleged Mansfield Officer Assault, Car Chase

Police say an one person assaulted an officer and another led a chase from Mansfield to Taunton.

Mansfield, MA — Two homeless men face charges after allegedly assaulting a Mansfield Police officer and fleeing the lead.

Stephen Poirier, 29, was charged with assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, and active warrants. William Poirier, 60, was charged with operating a motor vehicle with revoked registration, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, failure to obey police and disorderly conduct. Further charges will be filed by Norton Police Department, Taunton Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police, according to the Mansfield Police Department.

At about 9 a.m. Thursday morning, an assault was reported in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Francis Ave. Both men were allegedly seen getting into a silver sedan as officers arrived on scene. During a traffic stop, officers attempted to place Stephen Poirier into custody and a brief struggle ensued, resulting in a minor injury to one of the officers. While the officers were attempting to gain control of Stephen, William Poirier fled in the silver Toyota Corolla on Oakland St. toward Foxborough.

The pursuit continued through Norton, into Taunton, and eventually came to a conclusion on Interstate 495 South in the area of Route138 after Norton, Raynham, and MSP had deployed “stop sticks” along the route. William was taken into custody by Norton police with the assistance of state police. He was transported to Morton Hospital for an evaluation. Stephen was transported to Attleboro District Court on the warrant and additional charges.
