Hawk Blamed For Mansfield Power Outage

Turns out it wasn't the storm that caused the outage.

MANSFIELD, MA — With rain pouring down and the sound of thunder across Mansfield, many assumed that was the reason why over 1,600 customers lost electricity Wednesday night. Turns out that something else in the sky was the culprit.

Mansfield Municipal Electric Department Director Joseph Sollecito told the Mansfield News that hawk that got caught between live conductors at a power riser outside the Gilbert Street substation caused the outage. While squirrels have caused the lights to go out at a few homes, the hawk is something new for MMED.

Power on West Street and the downtown area was out from 7:10 to 8:45 p.m. Wednesday night.
